This tutorial will explain all you need to know on using the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol D2 with Ableton Live. This midi dj controller is equipped with plenty of features that make it the perfect companion to Ableton Live. How about instead of doing that you use the plethora of new tools available to make things more unique and interesting than a crossfaded iTunes playlist. The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol D2 is a versatile midi dj controller and when used alongside Ableton Live, it's an incredible tool filled with potential. I also think using encoded vinyl for House sets is a little ridiculous.

Now that tracks are easily found in a browser, quickly swapped in and out, and there’s no need to manually beat match then what exactly is the DJ doing? Picking 2 songs that blend well together? That’s not exactly difficult epic skills. I think part of the reason for the kickback against digital DJing is like you said back in the vinyl days there was a lot of time spent crate diving and manually beat matching. Might get into it again some day but it's strange how using all this amazing technology stuff is still shunned upon these days in some places *cough* Denver.Įxactly. I don't want to put a ton of effort into playing with other peoples tracks.

I guess thats why I've moved more towards working on a live act, DJing is boring for me even though it usually goes over well (18 years of experience and all). I'm waiting for it to be the norm for people to do live edits and more building of tracks during a set than just playing records. Now I agree that people need to do so much more than just put two tracks together if all they are doing is DJing. When it was vinyl days you had to always keep up on your beat match so you barely had time to mix it took a little skill to be really solid. I am sooooooo f*ing bored with picking two tracks to go together. 18 years now (I'm 35 now) (dear god help me). There are so many more options now but I think most DJs don't challenge themselves to perform to that level, are too scared by it, or think they are brilliant enough just picking 2 tracks that blend well together.Īiryck wrote:I've been DJing for. I'd say on average he is adding something new about every 10 seconds or so and it still sounds cohesive.Īnd that was done with the tools available back in 2009. Even shows what is going on with the software. Here's a DJ that is constantly using 4 tracks of fleshed out songs to stack and loop. I'm not saying all those features aren't useful but the people you hear "meh" from are probably the ones playing extensively fleshed out tracks that handle themselves. The people that would use all those extra features are those either playing music that requires more interaction to be interesting or possibly combination of edits and original productions. A good amount of music handles it's self, that is it stays interesting and changes enough that it doesn't require much from the DJ except putting on the next track and picking the order (simplified). I think much of that depends on the music you are playing.

Very few see them as options to building a completely unique set full of coherent performance. It’s either “I am going to play this song and then that song” or “All these options are for sporadic wankery”.

I’m sure 98% of DJs fail to see/utilize what these software and hardware combos have to offer. Dna598 wrote:I fail to see how any of this can compete with rocking up to a pair of cdj 900's (or above) ready plumbed into the club, armed with a single usb stick.
